ST100 ETP - Sustainable Energy Production

Video Play Button

Demand for energy is rising all over the world, while fossil fuel resources are dwindling and the climate is being adversely affected. Meanwhile the spectre of climate change is looming.

Science and technology can provide the answer that will be needed to tackle these issues. Today’s students will need a firm grounding in the scientific and engineering principles that underpin these technologies, if they are to contribute to the future of sustainable energy.

The module includes a large selection of practical activities and an exciting Energy Simulator software application.

Topic areas include:

  • Fossil fuels
  • Wind
  • Geothermal
  • Hydro
  • Energy in buildings
  • Solar PV and thermal
  • Biomass
  • Nuclear
  • Fuel cells
  • The grid

Activities include:

  • Identify how the majority of global power generation is produced using fossil fuel
  • Recognize the need for sustainable energy resources
  • Investigate the science and impact of climate change
  • Use solar panels to generate electricity
  • Use a solar furnace to generate steam
  • Power a Stirling engine using solar energy
  • Use a wind turbine to generate electricity
  • Build a model wind farm to power a lighting grid
  • Devise a plan for using hydro electric power for large scale power generation
  • Explore how energy from the Earth can be used to generate electricity
  • Explore nuclear energy, radiation and evaluate risks
  • Fuel Cells: Use fuel cell technology to extract hydrogen from water
  • Fuel cells: Use a hydrogen fuel cell system and a range of power plants
