Workshop Health and Safety

HSA1 is a computer-based instructional module that has been designed to teach the fundamentals of workshop health and safety.

The module incorporates curriculum materials that are divided into a series of on-screen, interactive assignments.

All assignments incorporate continuous assessment through questions. When used in conjunction with a ClassAct networked management system, this provides instant feedback of student performance.

On-screen assignments may be theory-based or practical-based.

Theory-based assignments provide essential knowledge of fundamental health and safety.

Practical-based assignments direct students to carry out tasks in the workshop, using a jobsheet.

Curriculum material topics include:

  • Workshop plans.
  • Workshop hand tools and equipment. Work injuries including burns, scolds and crushing.
  • Accidents and first aid.
  • Fire hazards and fire safety.
  • Electrical safety.
  • Hazards and risk assessments.
  • Personal hygiene and safety (including PPE).
  • Manual handling.
  • Machine drills and engine cranes.
  • Workshop housekeeping rules.
  • Workshop equipment safety.
  • Motor dealership structure and organisation.
  • Vehicle and property care.
  • Vehicle inspection.
  • Vehicle preparation and completion.

Typical practical tasks include:

  • Drawing a scaled workshop plan and calculating surfaces areas and volumes.
  • Identifying common workshop hand tools and faults that would make them unserviceable.
  • Identifying common workshop equipment and faults that would make them unserviceable.
  • Identifying and locating workshop health and safety notices and signs.
  • Identifying common workshop lifting equipment and associated safe working loads.
  • Identifying potential workshop hazards.
  • Identifying and listing hazardous workshop substances.
  • Locating first aid kits and understanding workshop accident procedures.
  • Health and safety notices and signs.

  • Workshop hazards, including dust inhalation, fumes, gases, compressed liquids, chemical paint remover and A/C refrigerant

  • Carrying out a risk assessment of common workshop tasks.
  • Locating and wearing correct workshop PPE.
  • Demonstrating correct methods of lifting and carrying loads.
  • Demonstrating the correct method of using a machine drill, with correct PPE.
  • Demonstrating the correct method of using an engine crane, with correct PPE and risk assessment carry out.
  • Demonstrating the correct method of cleaning a floor spillage, with correct PPE.
  • Performing a safety inspection of the workshop, and filling in a defect form.
  • Performing a safety inspection of workshop equipment, and filling in a defect form.
  • Examining the organizational structure of a typical motor trade dealership.
  • Identifying valuable items in a vehicle and how they should be protected against damage or theft.
  • Locating and identifying the use of vehicle protection items.
  • Inspecting a workshop vehicle and highlighting faults on an inspection sheet.
  • Demonstrating the correct method of preparing, performing and completing a task on a vehicle.

Competence-based reporting

Each on-screen assignment is designed around a list of performance objectives. These include academic, technical, and occupational objectives.

The assignments are written in such a way as to enable a student to attain the performance objectives, with the assessment questions linked to these in order to provide a measure of true competency.

The performance objectives are used by the ClassAct management system to generate a comprehensive portfolio of student competency reports.

The module includes default competence reports that address the requirements of UK Automotive Awarding Bodies.
