What effect will Windows XP Service Pack 2 have on my ClassAct and ClassCampus systems?

The security enhancements which Microsoft have released in Windows XP Service Pack 2 do affect both the ClassAct and ClassCampus systems. In both cases the changes required to enable the systems to continue working are relatively minor.

In recognising that the security changes they were releasing could have adverse affects on many programs, Microsoft have made it relatively straightforward to add exceptions to enable current applications to function as originally intended.

The affected applications and the changes to the security settings required are listed below. In the case of 'Exceptions', you can either make the changes manually (refer to the Microsoft help on making 'Exceptions'), or use the scripts we have provided. We have chosen the settings which have minimal impact on security.

ClassAct Management System and Workstation Installation:

Symptom: After inserting a ClassAct Installation CD you may recieve a message about active content and also a warning in the security bar that active content is being blocked. The page displayed will indicate that your browser is not up to date and that you should install a newer version of Internet Explorer from the CD - ignore this message. This applies to both CD720 Workstation Installation and CD435 Management System Installation.
Reason:  The new security settings in SP2 are blocking the active content on the startup pages needed to guide you through the installation.
Workaround:  Either click in the Internet Explorer Security bar and select the 'Allow Blocked Content' option or follow the instructions on the warning page and run the 'Setup.exe' program manually.

ClassAct NT Management System Operation:

Symptom: Students will not be able to logon to the management system.
Reason:  The Windows firewall is blocking incoming communication from the ClassAct Workstation.
Exception:  Allow TCP port 5001 on the local subnet.
Update: Click here for a script which will make this setting for you.

ClassAct Workstation Operation:

Symptom:  Messages sent from the management system are not received.
Reason:  The Windows firewall is blocking incoming communication from the ClassAct management system.
Exceptions: Allow UDP port 5002 on the local subnet.
Allow TCP port 5003 on the local subnet.
Update: Click here for a script which will make these settings for you.

ClassCampus:

Symptom:  Functions requiring pop-up type windows do not work, e.g. End of chapter report does not load.
Reason:  By default, Internet Explorer now blocks pop-up windows.
Exception:  Allow pop-up windows on the ClassCampus site.
Update: Click here for instructions on how to make this change.
